Andy brings a lifetime of competitive experience. With a total of over 25 years martial arts experience ranging from Karate as a young boy and TAEKWONDO as a teenager, to sanshou, kung fu, and then SETTLING on brazilian jiu jitsu(bjj) in 2010,
Since he started BJJ in 2010 he has travelled far and wide learning from some of tHe sports greats and pioneers.
andy has competed in both contact sports and team sports since he was 17, when he won gold in his division at a national teakwondo competion 1992. But it wasn’t until he had his first bjj competition experience at the age of 36 at the bournemouth BJJ open in 2011 that he really got the competition bug.
It was not a fairytale story of amazing sucess. The first two competitions at white belt were learning EXPERIENCES. But the bug of competition bit fully when he started training with Nick Brooks and his team in Mill hill in london at the end of 2011. After a few classes Andy managed to get silver in the english open after only training in the gi for 10 months. This would turn out to be the first of many medals while training with Nick and his team at mill hill.
what followed was 10 years of travelling all over the UK and parts of europe to train and compete when possible. Regularly competing several times a month.
Back in 2015 Andy went with friends and other members of the Mill hill team to rio de janero in brazil to train and compete. Managing to get a silver medal in his first COMPETITION in the home of the sport.
andy started his coaching journey back in july 2019 when he was asked to be the grappling coach at an isle of wight mma club by the two brothers that were starting it up. During his time there Andy built a SUCCESSFUL competition team that were using their grappling skills to win national level competitions in both gi and nogi. Along with the mma team getting a reputation for being dangerous on the ground, with submission wins a regular OCCURRENCE. Including amateur mma title wins under several promotions.
This included andy stepping in to the cage in 2023 at the age of 47 to fight someone 15 years younger and coming away with a victory via rear naked choke.
In 2024 it was time to move on to give running his own club a go, and on June the 03rd 2024 prodigy martial arts held its first open mat in a cleared out mot bay that was just 30 square meters of space. The rest of the area that was to become the gym was taken up by the landlords furniture, old kitchen, rs2000, xr3i, and an original mini plus engine and interior.
The club was officially opened to the public on September the 03rd 2024. Since then it has grown quickly in to the areas fastest growing martial arts club. Quickly managing to pick up medals in south coast tournaments. While also managing to have a demographic of children and adults ranging from 5 to 63.
This is mostly due to andy insisting that everyone should have the chance to give it a go. From competitors to hobbyists young and old.
Jiu jitsu is for everyone.
